Homely Bo: The Shadow Man is an entertaining and very peculiar mystery meets magical realism novella by Jason Tor. It's a first-person recollection of Bodhi Wardcliff's (AKA Homely Bo) and his best friend's encounter with 'the shadow man'. In Homely Bo, Bodhi explains the events leading up to his own death – intrigue!

This book review was first published on Reedsy Discovery.

In Homely Bo: The Shadow Man, Homely Bo is a young private detective who owns Homely Bo's Detection Diner: A diner where you can score a killer sandwich, but it also functions as Homely's PI office. He has this eerie ability/curse/gift where he sees some people in black and white, and he has no clue why. Fascinating, right? Unfortunately, Homely lost his grandfather and his parents to unnatural causes (a few years apart). And when he finds out there's something fishy happening around town, he does everything in his power to keep those he loves safe.

The first paragraph in which Bodhi mentions he died raises many questions and makes you wonder what's next.

As for my recent demise, I've been encouraged to document my dealings with the darkness I encountered on that fateful day.

What follows is a quick-paced narrative and an out-of-this-world way of thinking by unique, quirky characters whose philosophic approach to life, the universe, the afterlife, and what some of our furry companions are capable of will blow your mind.

The dialogue was witty and entertaining, and the main characters' relationships with each other were caring and honourable: A great circle of friends you can rely on whenever you need them.

I also enjoyed Tor's descriptive narrative. I was able to picture every scene and every detail (especially the gross ones):

His bad, leaky white eye was open and staring up at me in terror. It was still dripping its never-ending supply of crimson-hued brine, one drop at a time, in a productive attempt to sodden the closet carpet.

So, if you're looking for a quick and entertaining read, Homely Bo: The Shadow Man is the way to go.
